Alcatel's watch keeps it simple but lacks the smarts

Alcatel's OneTouch Watch brings a few really good ideas to the table: it's affordable (priced at $150 or €99; an equivalent of £98 and AU$186). It's water-resistant, reasonably. Its battery lasts several days. It works with both iPhones and Android...

The Alcatel OneTouch Watch has an attractive design, long (for a smartwatch) battery life, has a built-in USB charger in its band, works with iOS and Android phones, and includes basic fitness tracking.

Buggy-feeling connectivity as well as slow custom software and user interface feel hard to operate; read-only notifications; LCD screen isn't always on; heart-rate monitor only does spot readings, and doesn't give consistent readings.

The Alcatel OneTouch Watch is an affordable and reasonably attractive basic smartwatch, but it doesn't work well enough to justify choosing one over better and increasingly comparably priced alternatives.

The Alcatel OneTouch Watch gets the basics right, but the lack of an app store and finicky fitness tracking offset the affordable price and broad compatibility of this smartwatch.

Relatively inexpensive. Compatible with iOS and Android devices. Good battery life. Water-resistant. USB 2.0 charging port built into watch band.

Limited selection of apps and no app store. Stiff rubber strap. Inaccurate pedometer and heart rate monitor. Grainy display.

Conclusions Like most of its smartwatch brethren, the Alcatel OneTouch Watch is not going to set the world on fire. It only has a small number of predetermined apps, its fitness sensors could be more accurate, and its rigid rubber strap won't win over...

If the Apple Watch is just too expensive and Android Wear somehow offends you, you may dig Alcatel's $150 smartwatch response. Just prepare for compromises.

Affordable ; Easy charging. Long battery life (for a smartwatch) ; Works with both Android and iPhones

Extremely feature-limited ; Notifications engine is undercooked ; Activity-tracking features are thin ; Aesthetics: meh

It's not a great smartwatch. It's not even a good smartwatch. But it will put notifications and activity-tracking on your wrist, and give you an idea of what smartwatches are all about.
