Nintendo 3DS XL Circle Pad Pro review: just like the original, but bigger

The 3DS XL Circle Pad Pro gives you an extra analog stick when you need it, but its poor design can be frustrating.

Gives the 3DS XL dual-analog controls ; Comfortable ; Easy to use

Blocks game card slot, WiFi and stylus ; Requires AAA battery ; Extremely bulky

In the end, the 3DS XL Circle Pad Pro is little more than a larger, slightly more comfortable version of its predecessor. It's a niche device designed only to work with a handful of games. It doesn't improve on the old design in any significant...

Nintendo 3DS XL Review

For those of you on the fence about a 3DS, the larger display of the 3DS XL should be enough to convince you to take the plunge.

Much bigger 3D display ; Larger touchscreen is easier to use ; Better, more ergonomic design

Adding a right thumb stick would have made sense ; $30 more than original 3DS ; Software library is still weak

The 3DS XL is an improvement to the original Nintendo 3DS without question. The larger screen is much easier on your eyes, and the lower screen’s increased girth makes things like touch commands easier. The ergonomic redesign is also much easier on...

Nintendo 3DS XL review: bigger is better, but it's still not quite enough

If you've been holding off from buying a 3DS, the improvements to the screens and battery are enough to warrant a purchase, but some issues still remain.

Bigger screen improves the 3D effect significantlyImproved battery life under some conditionsMore comfortable to hold and use

Digital content still lackingNo secondary analog stickNot the most powerful of handheld hardware

After playing with the 3DS XL, we returned to the original only to find it difficult and awkward to use in comparison. The new size is an improvement in so many ways, including ergonomics and playability. The bigger screen makes 3D gaming less tiring,...

Nintendo 3DS XL

Does the 3DS get better when you go extra-large?

A more immersive big-screen experience ; Makes 3D more effective and more practical ; More comfortable than the original 3DS ; Great games, and easy and fun to use

Big screen spoilt by low resolution ; Battery life still not great

Nintendo could arguably have upgraded processors and used the overhead to either render 3DS graphics to a higher resolution or upscale, but here there would have been cost implications. All the same, that screen can be merciless in exposing the...

The New Nintendo 3DS XL almost nails it

A few head-scratching design choices prevent us from falling for the New 3DS XL, but this is still the best Nintendo portable to get.

The 3D screens are improved by new face-tracking, and the larger size offers a less cramped viewing experience. Internal tweaks and updates add a behind-the-scenes boost.

The poor battery life hasn't improved. Having to remove the back of the console to change the SD card is a poor design choice and the legacy data transfer process is infuriating. Also, there's no AC charger in the box -- you have to buy one separately.

The 3DS XL's improved 3D head-tracking is a big step up and its performance boost more makes a noticeable difference. A few head-scratching design choices prevent us from falling for the New 3DS XL, but this is still the best Nintendo portable to get.

Nintendo 3DS XL: A great little place to play games (updated review)

Three years in, Nintendo's little handheld has become a seriously good game device, and the XL is the best version.

The ; has a two big screens, tons of great games, feels sturdy, and is the most kid-friendly gaming platform currently available.

Battery life is fair but still not great; the graphics are starting to look dated compared to other game platforms, and the 3D is largely an afterthought; only one analog pad; downloaded game management still a huge headache.

Three years in, the Nintendo 3DS handheld has become a seriously good game device -- especially for fans of Nintendo's classic gaming franchises -- and the XL is the one you should buy.

Nintendo 3DS XL review

It shouldn't come as a surprise to see Nintendo launch a new 3DS revision less than 18 months after the original console — after all, the company waited almost exactly the same length of time...

Review: Nintendo 3DS XL

Nintendo's 3DS XL -- a larger version of its handheld gaming machine -- doesn't just need to supplement the existing 3DS, it needs to redefine...

Colossal-size screens make old and new games look their best. Larger form factor and battery life make a more comfortable, convenient experience. Double the included memory

Games still cost each. Still no account system. Still waiting for Nintendo to unleash the floodgates of cheap digital content instead of trickling out zero to three games a week

Nintendo 3DS XL

The Nintendo 3DS XL is a large, fun handheld with a big backwards-compatible game library and a bigger screen, but if you're upgrading from an original 3DS, you'll have to leave your downloaded games behind.

Big, beautiful screen. Solid build. Comfortable to hold.

Glasses-free 3D still has issues. System transfer process is convoluted.

Nintendo 3DS XL review

Can the super-sized Nintendo 3DS XL improve on its portable gaming predecessor?

Bigger screen looks great ; 3D sweet spot much larger ; Comfortable curved design

Build feels a bit cheap ; Heft makes it cumbersome ; Bland styling
