If for some reason you don't want to embrace Blu-ray, the XDE600 offers good value and decent upscaled images – and we've seen it even cheaper

1080p spec ; USB input ; bright, colourful pictures

Lacks sonic detail and visual subtlety

We have seen it a fair bit cheaper, which makes it great value, but we feel obliged to point someone towards a more capable budget BD player

Of course the quality of this processing does highlight how mediocre the XDE-600’s non-XDE upscaled pictures are – detail is vague, colours are uninspiring and noise seems more of a problem. But then buying this player and not using XDE is like driving...

If you can't afford a Blu-ray deck but still want great pics, then this is where it's at

XDE is still the best upscaling tech around, and the price is hard to argue with

It feels cheap, and is guilty of over-processing at times

Waste of time, effort and money

 

As far as Toshiba goes, I think I'll stick to the computers. Nothing else from them. But then again, you get what you pay for. Dropped two eggs for the irritating aspect ratio issue, and one for the factory DOA. Quality control, I fear, is a thing of...

The features are great. USB, the whole bit (even despite the limitations). Very useful

That is, when it runs right. First one was DOA - tray wouldn't operate. So I swapped it out, and the replacement ran fine. But the one annoying thing that never ceases. It'll play 2 or 3 discs, then after that, it will NEVER maintain it's aspect ratio....

The Regza link is smart. Insert a DVD and the Toshiba regza TV knows to change to the HDMI input with the DVd player. makes using the units easy.

The only stand alone player I have used with better upscaling are the Toshiba HD DVD Players. Win 7 & Media center upscaling can also be as good but for under $100_ this is the best upscaling player on the market ; This unit also handles the various...
