I've used another well-known brand for a while, and I'm still up in the air about OPTI-UPS. I don't know if I'd by another one.

Well, I've got this unit covering a relatively low power machine. I got it because it was small and unobtrusive

Follow-up Update to initial review...

 

In my opinion this sample cant be trusted, so it's going back to be exchanged for an APC. You get what you pay for, do not waste your time saving a few bucks, it's not worth it. I learned the hard way.. why should you.

Small & compact

Did not work the second time around! Lights went out - unit went off along with my entire system

The little box that could

 

Skip using the software. Wouldn't you know it.. they put it on sale the day I received it!

A compact, seemingly well made, heavy duty product. Does the job so far - already needed it! Comes with an extra cheater cord for your PC (I guess)

A slight buzz can be heard emitting from the unit at all times. I didn't care for the software, or the lack of a USB interface. Serial port too old-fashioned

Good Utility

 

I haven't had it for long, but it seems nice. The control utility is cool and easy to install/use. I tested this ups by pulling the plug a couple of times. The PC didn't even flicker. :)

Does what it's supposed to.

 

Works well. I bought it to prevent against the small power bumps we have in the summertime (high AC usage) and it does work well. It's sensitive enough to pick up small bumps and then fires off an alert so you know when it went active

Wow! It really had a strong smell when it came out of the box. Dissipated over a couple of days but be prepared for it

I was either going to buy a RS232 to USB converter cable or a serial PCI card to make it work, since my computer is a brand new Dell XPS and does not have a serial port. Locally, both options costed same (~$xx) so I opted for PCI serial card which came...

a good buy I think

 

Nice software for linux, although the distribution is a little strange--binaries cat'd onto a shell script.

Doesn't give an expected battery run time that I can tell, although it does have a load meter.
